The “Zauber der Dualität” describes the fascinating interplay of opposites – such as light and dark, self and world, mind and heart, or major and minor – which shape our experience and, through their balance, give rise to harmony and wholeness. It is a fundamental principle in philosophy, mathematics, spirituality and, not least, in music, which uses separation as a necessary means of understanding unity.

und das Licht sprang hoch, zitternd hoch, wie zur Wehr;
aber hundert tanzende Blütenblätter
wiegten sich rot, rot, rot um mich her,
und es tanzte mein Boot,
und mein Schatten auf dem Schaum,
und das grüne Meer, das Meer - -

~ Richard Dehmel

Musikverein Festival: „Kult! Beethovens Sargschlüssel“

ABO III
Monday, 5 April 2027, 7.30 pm
Musikverein Brahms Saal

Irmfried Radauer  (1928 Salzburg - 1999 Patras) "Hommage … Mozart 1984" (Partita correlativa) 1. Satz
Wolfgang A. Mozart (1756 Salzburg - 1791 Vienna) Gran Partita

Friedrich Gulda (1930 Vienna - 2000 Weißenbach/Attersee) Cello Concerto

Aleksander Simić Violoncello
Glass Marcano Conductor

Friedrich Gulda dedicates his Cello Concerto to Heinrich Schiff, who premieres the work. In his music, Gulda turns to ‘Mr Mozart’ with striking frequency, building a bridge between the Classical period and contemporary music. The instrumentation of the Cello Concerto also echoes the unusual ensemble of Mozart’s Gran Partita.

In the Mozart Year, Radauer composes a piece inspired by the Gran Partita, which itself becomes a ‘cult’ work and is titled ‘Gran Partita’ not by Mozart but by an unknown composer, clearly demonstrating its status amongst the otherwise rather ‘folk-like’ serenades: the uncrowned, undisputed queen of concert music.

"Concerto Danubiano"

Sylvia Bodorova (*1954 in České Budějovice) "Concerto Danubiano" for violin, timpani and string orchestra

Paul Kropfitsch Violin
Marek Stilec Conductor

Here, the Danube brings a sense of dynamism, swirling around the lives of the composers who moved in Gustav Mahler’s circle:

Mathilde Kralik von Meyerswalden, an outstanding student of Bruckner and, at the same time, Mahler’s colleague at the Vienna Conservatory of the Friends of Music;

Sylvia Bodorova, also a strong woman and one of the most significant contemporary Czech composers, who is developing her compositional style within this tradition and finds herself caught in the maelstrom: Mahler, who cannot rest easy with Beethoven’s late, compact string quartets...
